The Torch reports that Canadian Forces are training in the Arctic this month: Northern Operation Nanook 08. The scenarios they're practicing:
* an outbreak of disease on a cruise ship
* a hostage-taking on a cruise ship
* a fuel spill and a fire on a Russian cargo ship

One thing I was thinking of is that in the Eemian dispite the higher temperatures the Siberian peat bogs didn't release their methane. This is puzzling as it is supposed to be happening now.

What would happen in these sorts of scenarios, I mean once you are in the Arctic, how long would it take to get a rescue vessel out there.
