What are the Russians up to in and off of Norway (Norway's Security)...
...where fighter jets scramble on average once a week to intercept Russian warplanes buzzing close to their country. The Kremlin’s aircraft and ships do not quite break international law. But they commit what a senior official terms “breaches of etiquette”. These have included naval manoeuvres in the midst of Norway’s oil and gas platforms in the North Sea, involving aggressive air sorties that grounded all offshore helicopter flights; that was inconvenient, expensive and dangerous. Also troubling was a mock bombing run against Norway’s northern command centre at Bodo, and at least three other, so far unpublicised, incidents.
Whatever it is, it's making people nervous. Norway, Sweden, and to some extent Finland, are looking at increased security co-operation: North stars. Introducing the Nordic Atlantic Defense Organization:
Sweden and Norway, once prickly friends, are striking up a new defence relationship... Co-operation on airspace monitoring, combined military procurement, joint training and co-ordinated intelligence work will all be bearing fruit in 2009.
Panting to catch up is Finland, neutral in theory but in practice also spooked by an increasingly assertive Russia....
The two pressing tasks for the new Nordic security partnership (don’t call it an alliance, or you will get a very chilly Scandinavian scowl) are to work out how to help the Baltic states, and to make plans for what they call the “high north”, the energy-rich area that lies between Europe and the North Pole...
Ben Franklin explained the principle involved (Wiki Answers):
Benjamin Franklin's statement, "We must all hang together, gentlemen...else, we shall most assuredly hang separately" was made at the signing of the Declaration of Independence and meant that if they did not band together in the fight against the British, they would all be hanged separately.

It seems like such a simple concept to turn things around. Unfortunately, the truth is (now) that those of us who truly care make up a very small group. As I look out my window, I see thousands of people who just don't give a damn. But if we continue to lead by example, our influence will grow. There's no denying the shape our world is in, and it is up to us, now, to try to change it. The things I've heard from the G8 Summit this week have been absurd.
