Juneau is a popular summer cruise destination. Last year we had 883,000 cruise ship visitors, this year we expect over 900,000; today we had over 11,000 from six cruise ships.
There's lots to do here. Many of the tourists will take a helicopter tour up to the Juneau ice field (and the glaciers coming from it) behind town. My daughter Beatriz works up there as a tour guide. Beatriz took this photo from inside the tour company's base camp tent - Mt. Stroller White is in the background.
Beatriz says that she and her friends have found that the best tippers are from India. This is clearly a good way for them to use all those dollars earned from data processing and call center operations.
PS July 16: A friend who drives tour buses is surprised that glacier guides think Indians are the best tippers. She also thinks its much more productive to think in terms of the the cruise ship line that brought the tourist, than of nationality. The Carnival line brings in a younger, party oriented crowd - not the best tippers. Much better are the old tourists getting off the Holland-America line ships.
