Luiza Savage takes a careful look at Clinton's campaign rhetoric on trade: Where do the Democratic contenders really stand on NAFTA? (McLeans.ca, Dec 6).
The title is a little misleading - this is primarily about Senator Clinton and only talks about other candidates to help "locate" where she stands on the issues.
Savage has taken a really useful look at Clinton's statements, paying close attention to the ambiguities, and calibrating the strength of her expressions of indignation about trade by teasing out the implications of her proposals, by comparison of her comments and actions, and by comparing both actions and comments with those of her competitors. Savage draws heavily on interviews with Jeffrey Schott and Mac Destler of the Peterson Institute.
Bottom line, place her somewhere between Edwards and Obama, and the Clinton Administration of the late 1990s. Destler doesn't see anything that is a major change in current policy, but perhaps a more serious commitment to trade adjustment assistance.
